Abstract

ADORNA CARMENATE, Zulema; GAMEZ FONSECA, Mercedes  and  DIAZ-CANEL NAVARRO, Ana María. Estimate of the stage and the activity of chronic viral hepatitis by the determination of serum alpha-phetoprotein. Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 2005, vol.24, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3011.

59 patients with chronic viral hepatitis B or C were studied to determine if there is a relation between the serum alpha-fetoprotein levels and the activity or stage of the liver disease, or both. Serum alpha-fetoprotein was measured coinciding with the performance of biopsy. The following histological variables were determined: necroinflammatory activity and fibrosis. No significant effects of the necroinflammatory activity or of fibrosis on alpha-fetoprotein were observed. It was concluded that there is no direct relation between alpha-fetoprotein and the necroinflammatory activity or fibrosis. That’s why, it is not possible to determine with accuracy neither the activity degree nor the stage of the disease, starting from the alpha-fetoprotein values.

Keywords : Alpha-fetoprotein; chronic viral hepatitis; necroinflammatory fibrosis.
