Abstract

TOLEDO GONZALEZ, Darwyn  and  CRUZ-BUSTILLO CLARENS, Diana. Microsatellite instability: some aspects of their relation to hereditary nonpoliposis colorectal cancer. Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 2005, vol.24, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3011.

A review on nonpolipoid hereditary colorectal cancer was made. It presents the highest incidence among the heridatary syndromes predisposing to colorectal cancer. It is characterized by its appearance at early ages, the presence of neoplastic lesions in the colon and other organs, and by microsatellite instability. The microsatelites are multiple repetitions from 1 to 5 nucleotides that are distributed all around the genoma. Due to their repetitive structure, the microsatellites are susceptible to errors during the replication process. The microsatellite instabilitiy results from a deficiency in the postreplicative repair mechanism of  erroneous matchings. Various genes whose products are involved in this mechanism and that are mutated in the tumors of the hereditary nonpoliposis colorectal cancer are known. Some of the different techniques  used to determine microsatellite instability in tumors of carrier patients are the single chain conformation polymorphism and immunohistochemical techniques.
