An observational-descriptive study aimed at characterizing some aspects of the competence and performance of professors in the analysis of a health problem was carried out during the academic year 1999-2000 in the teaching polyclinics in Camajuaní, Remedios and Caibarién. The professors answered a questionnaire and their performance in this specific activity was evaluated with an observational guide. The results were: low educational qualification of professors, little mastery of the teaching methods of problems; educational activities rated as Regular prevailed. There were deficiencies in teaching competence which affected the professional performance in the teaching activity.
