ABSTRACT

Introduction:

professional development should promote the development of competencies for a better work performance. The competent performance of medical personnel in transfusion therapy requires deep theoretical and practical knowledge.

Objective:

to evaluate the effectiveness of a training course in transfusion therapy aimed at residents in the specialty of General Comprehensive Medicine (MGI) of the Manuel González Díaz Teaching Polyclinic in Bahía Honda, Artemisa province, during the 2021-2022 academic year.

Methods:

an educational intervention study was carried out. The universe was constituted by 44 residents in the specialty of General Comprehensive Medicine linked to the medical assistance of the aforementioned polyclinic and the sample by 39 of them selected according to simple random sampling and exclusion and inclusion criteria. A questionnaire was prepared to collect the variables necessary for the study, the 6-week training course was designed and its impact was finally evaluated.

Results:

41 % of the sample showed low knowledge of the transfusion indication model, 35,9 % of them had some knowledge. There was low knowledge on transfusion in particular physiological situations for 25,6 %. About 74,4 % showed some knowledge. With the improvement course implemented, this knowledge improved considerably in the examined residents, obtaining high knowledge in 94,9 % of the sample.

Conclusions:

the improvement course implemented was able to correct the deficiencies found, it corresponds to the normative projections of the postgraduate course for the performance of these physicians in the adequate transfusion therapy.
