At present, as a result of the anthropogenic activity and industrial development, the biological diversity is being eroded, even the agrodiversity managed by farmers. In Cuba, since the nineties, there was a transitional period in agriculture, during which they tried to rescue Creole varieties from the main crops of the state sector and productive forms with an agroecologic approach, to get adapted to our country crisis. In the following study, the temporary and permanent (higher than 3-m woody plants) agrodiversity kept and managed by farmers in their estates was evaluated in two localities. Agrodiversity was submitted to an inventory per site, where the areas of each plot of crops and trees were sampled, to calculate Margalef y Shannon Weaver´s diversity indexes, so as to know the species wealth and performance within the farm. Therefore, Pinar del Río farms show a greater diversity regarding temporary and permanent species wealth and performance than those from Holguin farms; also perennial species-growing areas for both localities are more balanced concerning wealth and performance in the farm than the temporary ones, since monoculture is a more common practice within temporary crops and there is a main crop per each farm. It became evident that farmers are able to preserve agrodiversity, mainly the Creole or local species. This study approached two working methods (inventory of species and calculus of diversity indexes) and similar results were obtained for both sites, where grove areas are more stable than those of temporary crops.
