The concept of value and its relationship with the forms of social conciousness are defined. The moral values that must characterize the ethic conduct of the physician are identified based on the review of diverse ethics codes (national and international) of the profession and some experiences and propositions existing in Cuba as to the formation of values, specially in Higher Medical Education. We pretend with this paper to contribute to a better and more conscious understanding of the process of formation of values, as well as of the present status of its study.
