The advances that have helped Nursing to become a scientific discipline are analyzed. A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted at the Provincial Center for Technical Improvement, in Cienfuegos, with 2nd-year nursing students in order to analyze their vocation to nursing speciality after finishing the first year of the career. To this end, a sample of 50 students of the universe of 78 (64.1 % of the matriculated students) was randomly surveyed. The role played by the activities of professional guidance and vocational training was considered as a fundamental element. As regards the vocational interests of the students, it was observed that there was vocation to the speciality in 90 % of the students, whereas 98 % showed more inclination once they concluded the first year. It was concluded that the practical activity with the patient is a motivative factor.
