An exploratory investigation was made from November 1996, to April, 1997 at the Nursing Subdivision of the "Pedro Díaz Coello" Polyclinic, in Holguín, through anonymous surveys aimed at analyzing the satisfaction degree and the self-steem level of nurses in their job. The objetive of this paper was to contribute to a better knowledge about selfsteem in the nursing personnel. 80 nurses who were working, from a staff of personnel of 103, were surveyed. The rest had maternity leave, personal problems, or they were working out of the institution, which accounted for 78 % of the total. It was observed a long working history, since more than 65 % had been working for more than 15 years, which made possible an adequate analysis of self-esteem in the profession. As regards qualities and conditions, 100 % referred to parameteres as high as human qualities, responsibility, consecration, vocation and being very revolutionary, among others. 86.25 % said that they had studied Nursing because they felt really inclined to do it and they were very happy with their proffesion, since they considered its great value and they were highly recognized not only by patients, and mass organizations in the community, but also by the society that constantly showed signs of affection and love. There were some nurses that did not express themselves well, which allowed to determine that most of the nurses in that polyclinic had a high level of self-steem and that the principle of humanism was the most important trait.
