RIVAS MARTINEZ, Zoraida; ABELLA GARCIA, Caridad; AMANDY POLO, Zoila  y  JIMENEZ VALDES, Vicia Dora. Educación avanzada en enfermería: Una necesidad para el desarrollo de la profesión. Rev Cubana Enfermer [online]. 1999, vol.15, n.2, pp. 72-78. ISSN 1561-2961.

A literature review on advanced studies for nursing professionals was performed from January to May, 1997 in Cienfuegos province. There was a brief introduction about the postgraduate education in the present decade and its importance for the improvement of health indicators under the specific historical conditions of our society. This study allowed us to identify the problems that nursing professionals face to take Diplomate, Specialization Master and Doctorate courses. Besides, we learned of a study requested by Paho which assessed the situation of Latin America and the Caribbean where advanced education as a national system seems to be incipient compared to that of Brazil, Canada and the United States that showed a great progress in such studies for nurses. PAHO efforts to provide an updated vision of nursing postgraduate courses through human resources development programs are also assesed. Despite detected difficulties, there have been some advances in the development and consolidation of advanced education for professional nurses.

Palabras clave : EDUCATION, NURSING, GRADUATE; SCHOOLS, HEALTH OCCUPATIONS.
