In this article, a literature review is conducted to propose strategies to encourage thanatourism as a tourism alternative in Ecuador. Also known as dark tourism, this modality exploits the cultural heritage related to death, suffering and pain to generate a different experience. Through a methodological procedure of qualitative approach, it is known that in the country there are potentialities for its development. However, the bibliometric analysis of the national scientific production on the subject shows that studies on thanatourism in Ecuador are mainly focused on the identification of sites. Although national research on the inclusion of this modality in the offer of the country has grown in recent years, it is concluded that its development as a tourism alternative requires progress in the management of the sites, in its tourism interpretation, in its institutional framework, in the inclusion of the community and in the generation of strategic alliances.
