Positive psychology is presented as a novel approach that focuses its objectives in achieving the well-being and happiness of the human being which raises criticism by scholars of the psychology of health. The article analyzes the coincidences and controversies that give rise to criticism, between positive psychology and health psychology. A literature search related to the theme in SciELO, Redalyc and Pubmed. Matches are recognized in the emergence and antecedents of both disciplines with health orientation, as well as in objectives that are framed in the promotion of health and risk prevention. The analysis showed the convenience to recognize the advances achieved by positive psychology regarding the optimal development of the human being, and reveals the favorable that it would be to assume the complementation of positive psychology and of health, for the benefit of psychological science.
