MARTINEZ QUEROL, César  y  MARTINEZ MOREJON, César. The geriatric hypertension, a priority in primary health care. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2010, vol.26, n.3, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3038.

The arterial hypertension is the more frequent non-communicable chronic disease in elderlies in its systolic-diastolic modality and the isolated systolic one. It isn't a obligatory consequence of aging but the absolute risk concerning to events of accidents related to arterial hypertension are greater in this population segment. A cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted in a group of elderlies of a basic cohort from the "Ana Betancourt" Polyclinic of Plaza municipality for a year, rising to 1 431 cases. In all of them a arterial hypertension screening was performed and in the study were included those classified by the family physician as chronic disease carriers and the remaining sample included 498 hypertensive elderlies. All were assessed in the consulting room; a complete physical examination was made registered in the form designed by research's authors. There were 498 hypertensive patients (34,8 %), 335 of female sex (67 %) and 163 of male sex (33 %), where the majority was of primary cause or essential (98 %), and the I group (severity, the 67 %). The systolic-diastolic way rose to 84 % and the isolated systolic to 16 %. The more frequent complications in the group were: ischemic heart disease, left ventricular hypertrophy, the cerebrovascular disease, the cardiac insufficiency, the retinopathy, the dementia syndromes and the chronic renal failure. The 42% of hypertensive elderlies were well controlled.
