INTRODUCTION: The nanotechnology is a field of the applied sciences focused to the design, synthesis, characterization and application of materials and devices in a nanometric scale (1 to 100 nm). it is a very young science, its development as discipline it began at the end of the decade of 90 in last century. By definition it is transdisciplinary, it is applied in the industry, agriculture, biology, physics, chemistry, pharmacy, ecology, computer science, between other although alone one comes having worked more thanfor ten years in the same one this science promises to revolutionize the world that we know. OBJECTIVE: To describe the general aspects of the nanotechnology and some of their applications in the medicine. METHOD: Our study consists on an exhaustive bibliographical revision between the months of January of 2010 and March of 2011 of the modernized literature so much printed as digital of the topic in question. RESULTS: The most general aspects in the nanotechnology, the nanomaterial and the most important applications in the field of the medicine are offered. CONCLUSIONS: We have been able to see their important applications in diagnosis and treatment of illnesses that constitute a true challenge to the medical community as it is it the cancer, with the promising advantage of treating the damaged fabric directly and not healthy fabric, with scarce or few colateral effects.
