Visual arts take a special place in the “poetic system” from José Lezama Lima. Even though he only saw the main creations of universal arts through copies or reproductions, his extensive knowledge besides his fanciful imagination make possible the “re-invention” and poetic assimilation of key works, since antique arts to the twentieth century avant-garde. At the same time, his particular interpretation of Cuban painting history has among its principles the comparison of some national classic exponents with paradigmatic examples taken from universal arts.
