English language teachers in today´s Universities, more than ever, have a significant social responsibility considering that they teach the language as a tool for work and culture, socialization of knowledge and intercultural education, which requires their constant empowerment to succeed in a networked professional world. In this article, the authors discuss how the research competence is necessary to contribute to English teachers´ upgrading and professionalization, aspects that are necessary for teacher development and the fulfillment of their roles. Different standpoints are shared from the experiences of language educators of Universities like Cuba and Colombia.
