Abstract

OTERO SIERRA, Maite; LABRADA DESPAIGNE, Alberto  and  ACOSTA SANCHEZ, Manuel. Ten-year Experience in Laparoscopic Gastroplication. Rev Cubana Cir [online]. 2020, vol.59, n.3, e998.  Epub Nov 10, 2020. ISSN 0034-7493.

Introduction:

Obesity is a multifactorial chronic disease whose best treatment is currently bariatric surgery.

Objective:

To describe the short- and long-term outcomes of laparoscopic vertical gastroplication as a restrictive bariatric surgery technique.

Methods:

A descriptive, retrospective and longitudinal study was carried out in 436 obese patients who received laparoscopic vertical gastroplication, from January 2010 to January 2020, at General Calixto García University Hospital. Patients of both genders, older than 18 years, were included. The variables analyzed were age, sex, weight, height, body mass index, degree of obesity, waist circumference, associated diseases, blood glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride values, surgical time, intraoperative blood loss, perioperative complications, and percentage of overweight lost at one year.

Results:

The average age 38.48 years, with a predominance of the female sex. The mean body mass index was 45.41 kg/m2. The associated diseases were arterial hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, and diabetes mellitus. 8.6% presented intraoperative complication, while there were 5.9% of complications in the postoperative period. They were more related to the increased waist/hip ratio and only one death was reported.

Conclusions:

The results of laparoscopic vertical gastroplication are promising based on the usefulness of the restrictive bariatric technique as described in the series of patients treated over a period of ten years. It allowed a significant decrease in body mass index and the degree of obesity, with a significant impact on the percentage of lost weight lost and with few complications.
