Abstract
RODRIGUEZ MENDEZ, Gladys and CASTANEDA RODRIGUEZ, Grisel. The state examination in the specialty of periodontology and its relationship to the professional profile. Rev Cubana Estomatol [online]. 2015, vol.52, n.3, pp. 399-412. ISSN 1561-297X.
The purpose of the state examination is to ensure that certified specialists thoroughly meet the minimum competence standards of optimal professional performance, hence the need to evaluate the knowledge, skills and abilities of residents and graduates, on the basis of the objectives included in their professional profile. An observational descriptive study was conducted based on the Periodontology Specialty Program as independent variable and the objectives of the professional profile as dependent variable. During the pre-state examination stage, observations were performed of the on-the-job training of third year residents. Other instruments applied were an observation guide aimed at the various components of the state examination, interviews with residents upon completion of the exam, and surveys to the population cared for by residents. Results showed that residents had the competence and performance required to care for patients in secondary health care. The instruments, procedures and evaluation techniques used revealed that most of the objectives included in the professional profile had been satisfactorily achieved, reflecting the quality of the teaching process. Areas with difficulties and deficiencies were also spotted, which constitutes useful reference to improve the program and the teaching-learning process.
