Abstract
ZAPATA MARTINE, Alicia; PERDOMO LOPEZ, Idalmis; VERGEL RIVERA, Germán and SALAZAR DOMINGUEZ, Luis E. Utilización de antiepilépticos en un hospital general de Ciudad de La Habana. Rev Cubana Farm [online]. 2002, vol.36, n.3, pp. 162-169. ISSN 1561-2988.
A study on the use of prescription-indication drugs was conducted by using elements of consumption and practical consequences. Those patients who were admitted in any service during the studied semester and that were taking some oral antiepilectic drugs (354) were included. The use of oral antiepileptic drugs was calculated at daily doses defined at a ratio of 100 beds/day. The reasons for prescribing these drugs were identified and evaluated and the cost (price of the drug unit by prescribed amount in local currency) of such consumption was calculated. Carbamazepine generated a higher cost and a considerable part of its inadequate use was observed in the psychiatric service. The main reason for prescription was epilepsy, followed by sedation. The fundamental reasons for prescribing were adequate, but in some services a more efficient, safe and economic therapy could have been applied.
