Taking into consideration their wide use, mainly in community sepsis, and in order to promote the adequate use of tetracyclines, a brief historical review on their origin, evolution and development has been made, including their classification by generations, as well as elements concerning their chemical structure, action mechanism, action range, resistance of the microorganisms to them, pharmacokinetics, toxicity, indications and dosage.
