Abstract

FERNANDEZ MANZANO, Edita et al. Indicators associated to assistance functions of community-based pharmaceutical services in the Western region of Cuba, 2004. Rev Cubana Farm [online]. 2006, vol.40, n.3. ISSN 0034-7515.

For the purpose of laying down the foundations for the future implementation of a Pharmaceutical Care Program, a diagnosis of some features of the community-based pharmaceutical services in the Western provinces and in Isle of Youth municipality was made, taking data from the National Supervision performed in 791 drugstores of these territories from February to December, 2004 into consideration. Indicators related to population, number of drugstores, their classification and the presence of pharmaceutical professional staff were identified and estimated. It was found that in this Cuban region, there exist heterogeneous distribution of community-based drugstores which is not dependent on the size of population, and low ratio of Bachelors of Pharmacy per drugstore, regardless of the fact that the 4 types of drugstores approved in the country are present in these provinces. A thorough analysis of City of Havana, the capital of the country, was made. It was concluded that their characteristics are comparable to those found in the rest of the Western region.

Keywords : Community-based drugstores; pharmaceutical care.
