Abstract

MARCHANTE CASTELLANOS, Pilar  and  MERCHAN GONZALEZ, Francisco. Re-organization of education at Havana university according to the last curriculum of the colonial stage (1880 curriculum). Rev Cubana Farm [online]. 2008, vol.42, n.3. ISSN 0034-7515.

The last curriculum under Spanish domination was introduced in 1880. The intention of the colonial empire was to establish in the island the same system of education as in the metropolis, which represented, beyond any doubt, an outstanding advance in the public education of the colony. However, historical events led by the Cuban people in their pursuit of freedom from the oppressive colonial regime deeply marked the university realities and the introduction of 1880 curriculum, particularly, after the beginning of the Cuban-Spanish war in 1895. The objective of the present paper was to provide the main historic and organizational elements that conditioned the last years of the Spanish domination stage at the Havana university, so that they may serve as a basis when addressing aspects related to the School of Pharmacy in forthcoming articles.

Keywords : 1880 curricula in Havana university; Havana university from 1880-1898.
