Abstract

CASACO PARADA, Ángel. Papel del páncreas en al asma bronquial. Rev cubana med [online]. 1997, vol.36, n.3, pp.173-177. ISSN 0034-7523.

Bronchial asthma has a high prevalence worldwide and despite all efforts made, the mortality rate from this cause is increasing, while its actual rason remains unknown. In this review evidences regarding the role of pancreatic hormones such as insulin and glucagon in the pathophysiology of bronchial asthma, are reported. The hypothesis that due to the proinflammatory effect of insulin and to the antiinflammatory effect of glucagon, the alterations in plasma concentrations of these hormones may be important for the evolution of bronchial asthma is pointed out. The possible deleterious role of the different classic anti-asthmatic therapies are discussed regarding the influence of such therapies upon these hormones and it is suggested to carry out further investigations which could give light to the current knowledge.

Keywords : ASTHMA [pathophysiology]; INSULIN [metabolism]; GLUCAGON [metabolism].
