Very advanced clinical studies suggest and prove multiple immunologic therapies aimed to interfere with the complex mediator system of the inflammatory response; another rason to motivate the clinicians who want to have a deep understanding about the pathogenesis of the adult respiratory distress syndrome. Updated international literature published in journals and text books was reviewed. Information about 26 of the articles published between 1989 and 1995, was selected. This information was used to place emphasis on the molecular pathophysiology of the inflammatory response, as well as for the interelation between its different components and the pulmonary diffuse organic damage.
