Abstract

RODRIGUEZ MUTUBERRIA, Liván; GALVIZU SANCHEZ, Reynaldo  and  ALVAREZ GONZALEZ, Eduardo. Neuromodulación farmacológica en la enfermedad cerebrovascular. Rev cubana med [online]. 2002, vol.41, n.2, pp. 98-110. ISSN 1561-302X.

Cardiovascular disease represents the third cause of death in developed and developing countries and its sequelae are the first cause of disability in adults. The most important therapeutic procedures for these patients include the improvement of brain blood flow and reduction or blocking of the metabolic consequences at sub-cellular and cellular levels. The fundamental advances in the knowledge of the physiopathological mechanisms of the brain ischemia in the last few years and the development of new drugs have disclosed the real expectations of the treatment and the rejection of nihilistic attitudes. A brief review of the concept of neuronal plasticity and pharmacological neuromodulation was made. A group of neuroprotective and neurotrophic drugs used in acute and chronic cerebrovascular disease, some of them under experimental stage, was presented.

Keywords : NEUROPROTECTIVE AGENTS [pharmacology]; NEURONAL PLASTICITY [drug effects]; CEREBROVASCULAR ACCIDENT [drug therapy]; FIBROBLAST GROWTH FACTOR [therapeutic use].
