SOCARRAS SUAREZ, María Matilde; BOLET ASTOVIZA, Miriam; RODRIGUEZ CALA, Fidel and CASTANEDA ABASCAL, Ileana. Assessment of the nutritional status and its complications in adult patients with cystic fibrosis. Rev cubana med [online]. 2005, vol.44, n.3-4, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-302X.
39 adult patients with cystic fibrosis that received medical attention at “General Calixto García” Hospital during 1998 were studied to describe the nutritional status and relate it to the results of the bacteriological sputum, to complications and to the pulmonary function. Anthropometric evaluations of weight and height were carried out, their BMI was calculated, and functional respiratory tests were done. It was found a higher percentage of patients with energy malnutrition (51.3 %). Of them 6 patients had respiratory bacterial infection. Pseudomona and staphylococcus predominated. It was observed that all the malnourished presented complications. The most common complications were the respiratory ones. It was detected a significant association bewteen the nutritional status and the presence of complications. Most of the malnourished had a low pulmonary function. A descriptive percentage analysis of the results was made and the non-parametric x 2 test with a significance level of p = 0.05 was performed.
