Abstract

LEYVA QUERT, Abel Yoandri et al. Clinical, epidemiologic and microbiologic profile of infectious endocarditis present in "Hermanos Ameijeiras" Clinical Surgical Hospital, 2005-2008. Rev cubana med [online]. 2009, vol.48, n.3, pp.1-14. ISSN 0034-7523.

Infectious endocarditis causes a length hospital stay and it is potentially fatal. It is retrospective study of 44 episodes of infectious endocarditis in 43 affected admitted in Cardiology Service of "Hermanos Ameijeiras" Clinical Surgical Hospital from 2005 to 2008 to characterize its clinical, epidemiologic and microbiologic behavior and intrahospital course. We note that mean age was of 51 ±16 years, men were the 61,4%, and man/woman ratio was of 3:2. There were not predisposing conditions in 20,5%. Prosthetic endocarditis prevalence was of 20,5% with a great compromise of mitral valve as well as adenoids in the 93,2% of cases. Hemoculture were negative in 45,5%; the more frequent causal germ was the Enterococcus (11,5%). Hospital mortality rate was of 18,2% and the more frequent complication was the acute renal dysfunction. Need of surgery was associated with a non-favorable clinical course during hospitalization.
