Abstract

ESPINOSA BRITO, Alfredo Darío; ROCHA HERNANDEZ, Juan Francisco; MENDOZA HERNANDEZ, Carlos  and  ESPINOSA ROCA, Alfredo Alberto. Help from the geriatrics specialty in caring for patients with COVID-19. Rev cubana med [online]. 2021, vol.60, n.4  Epub Dec 01, 2021. ISSN 1561-302X.

The care of the elderly sick with COVID-19 has gained great importance from the very beginning of the pandemic, due to the high frequency of serious forms in this group, as well as the high lethality, in vulnerable patients who present particular clinical situations for their care. In order to provide the best care, we share some general recommendations specific to the attributes and approaches of Geriatrics. The following topics are included and discussed: rapid geriatric evaluation; critical situations and procedures that older adults tolerate poorly; clinical practice guidelines and action protocols in these patients; intensive care and palliative care and convalescence. It is considered that the comprehensive clinical care provided to older adults with COVID-19, in all settings and by all the different specialists, can greatly benefit from the use in practice of the accumulated basic principles, knowledge and experiences for long decades by Geriatrics in the care of the elderly.

Keywords : COVID-19; coronavirus; SARS-CoV-2; older adults; seniors; geriatrics.
