Abstract

DE LA LASTRA RODRIGUEZ, Joaquín L et al. Tumores Productores de Aminas Simpáticas en el  Niño y Anestesia. Rev Cubana Pediatr [online]. 1999, vol.71, n.3, pp.178-184. ISSN 0034-7531.

Tumors producing an exaggerated amount of sympathetic amines are the pheochromocytoma and some neuroblastomas, ganglioneuro-blastomas and ganglioneuromas. This clinical situation gives the surgical risk a special connotation due to the dangers of paroxysmal arterial hypertension, arrhytmias, heart failure and other complications that threaten the patient´s life during the anesthetic procedure. To prevent this, it is important to make an a-adrenergic blockade first and 24 hours later a b-adrenergic blockade as part of the preoperative preparation to control arterial hypertension, tachycardia and other manifestations of the increased sympathetic activity. It is also necessary to take a series of appropiate measures during the anesthesia management to face paroxysmal episodes of arterial hypertension and hypotension, as well as the possible appareance of cardiac arrhytmias. The experience obtained in the management of a 7-year-old boy that had a tumor localized in a suprarenal gland with diagnosis of pheocromocytoma is presented in this paper.
