Abstract

A prospective and crossover study was carried out in patients admitted in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of "Dr. Angel Arturo Aballí" Hospital where criteria of sepsis came from community for a period of 18 months, September 1996 to March 1998, to analyze frequency of risk factors associated with infection. We assessed 70 patients who fulfiled criteria above mentioned. Healthy children were control group. By findings, we found that factors associated with sepsis included: male sex (p=0.002, RR=2.7), non-breast feeding (p=0.01, RR=3.3), malnutrition by defect (p=0.04, RR=2.1), crowding (p=0.0008, RR= 2.4), smoking (p=0.02, RR=2.4), and a poor hygiene (p=0.01, RR=1.5).
