A retrospective and descriptive study of the incidence and mortality of all low birth weight infants, who were born at the Gynecoobstetric Teaching Hospital of Guanabacoa, Havana City, during a period of 16 years, was conducted. During this time, there were 45 110 live briths, of whom 3 224 were low birth weight infants, for a total index of 6.8. An important decrease was observed in the low birth weight rate. The indexes obtained in l998 and 1999, 5.6 and 5.8, respectively, were stressed. There was also a significant reduction of the number of deaths due to low birth weight, and in 1999 there were no deaths. Sepsis was the first cause of death and asphixia the second. No infants died from hyaline membrane disease in the last 2 years of the study.
