INTRODUCTION: Left ventricular hypertrophy is the more significant evidence of target organs provoked by hypertension in children and adolescents. Echocardiogram is the main tool for its diagnosis. The main objective of present research was to determine presence of left ventricular hypertrophy be echocardiogram in children and adolescents presenting with essential high blood pressure and to relate it with risk factors. METHODS: More of the quarter of total had left ventricular hypertrophy. From them, the great frequency was for male sex and for the age-group from 10 to 14 years in both sexes. There was a greater percentage in those under 5 years and we established a significant statistic relation with the personal low and high birth weight and with the family background of ischemic heart disease.
