Abstract

VAZQUEZ MERAYO, Enrique; MORENO PISSAU, Francisco; LABRADA ARJONA, Eduardo  and  VAZQUEZ MARTINEZ, Yovany Enrique. Surgical treatment of acute pancreatitis using the modified Puestow technique. Rev Cubana Pediatr [online]. 2014, vol.86, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 0034-7531.

Chronic pancreatitis represents one of the major challenges of gastroenterology and its etiology remains difficult to be determined in 10-30 % of cases. This is the case of a 13 years-old male patient, diagnosed with immunological-type chronic pancreatitis, with stenosis of the main pancreatic duct. He was surgically treated with Roux's Y longitudinal pancreaticojejunostomy known as modified Puestow technique. The patient clinically improved, reached normal levels of his enzymes in one week, had no complications, progressed satisfactorily after surgery and stayed 14 days at hospital. At present, he keeps his satisfactory recovery after 4 years. The used surgical technique is generally considered as the ideal one because of low incidence of mortality (less than 3 %) and pain relief in over 75 % of patients. Therefore, it is considered that this surgical technique could be an effective therapeutic choice for treating this type of patient.

Keywords : chronic pancreatitis; modified Puestow technique; Roux's Y longitudinal pancreaticojejunostomy.
