Abstract

A descriptive cross-sectional study of 241 patients aged 0-19 years, seen at the pediatric and adolescent gynecology outpatient service in Playa municipality from September 1st, 1997 to September 30th, 1999, was conducted. Data were gathered from the patients’ medical histories and the following was analyzed: reasons to go the gynecologist’s office, some aspects of sexuality, microbiological diagnosis of Pap smears tests in girls who had leukorrea and their mothers. It was concluded that adolescents prevailed in the total number of cases seen, the main reason to go to the gynecologist’s office was to ask for contraceptive devices, the early sexual intercourses without contraceptive protection of adolescents. It was found that the main reason for the girls to go to the doctor’s was leukorrea and/or vulvovaginitis whereas the most frequent germ found in these girls and their mothers was Gardnerella vaginalis
