Abstract

VAZQUEZ NIEBLA, Juan Carlos; VAZQUEZ CABRERA, Juan  and  FEBLES, Víctor Julio. Efficacy of fetal weight estimation by ultrasound for the low birthweight prediction. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2003, vol.29, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3062.

A retrospective study of 202 births occurred at "América Arias" hospital from March 1998 to March 119 was undertaken to evaluate the capabilities of ultrasound for estimating fetal weight and detecting low intrauterine weight (less than 2 500g) taking as a basis the number of days elapsed from the estimation to the delivery (less than 8 days, 8 to 20 days and more than 20 days). The increase of efficacy of ultrasound to detect low birthweight was inversely proportional to the number of days from estimation to delivery. Less than 20 days apart, sensitivity was 91% and specificity was 83,5%. The positive predictive value was 74,5% and the negative predictive value was 94,6%. It was concluded that ultrasound is a useful tool for estimation of fetal weight and detection of low intrauterine weight.

Keywords : ULTRASONOGRAPHY; PRENATAL; INFANT, LOW BIRTH WEIGHT; FETAL WEIGHT.
