Abstract
LAFFITA BATISTA, Alfredo; ARIOSA, Juan Manuel and CUTIE SANCHEZ, José Ramón. Low Apgar score at birth and peripartum events . Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2004, vol.30, n.1. ISSN 0138-600X.
A retrospective and descriptive study of 87 mothers that had children with low Apgar score at birth was conducted at "América Arias" Gynecoobstetric Teaching Hospital, in 2002. The study was aimed at identifying the factors related to this event in peripartum. The continual delivery registries, as well as the medical histories of mothers and neonates were reviewed. It was found that the highest number of pregnant women were admitted in hospital and in the prelabor service with the diagnosis of spontaneous labor and that the highest percentage of births resulted from dystocia. Those that were born by cesarean section outstood in this group. Of the neonates with low Apgar score at 1 min, it was recovered a small percentage at 5 min. It was concluded that the main factor connected with low Apgar score at birth was the diagnosis and management of dystocias.
