A literature review on the method known as emergency contraception, its concept, action mechanism, mode of use, dose, efficiency, side effects and contraindications, was made aimed at providing an updated knowledge of the benefits of this method, since it can avoid a high percentage of unwanted pregnancies and reduce the number of women resorting to induced abortions.
