Abstract

RODRIGUEZ CARDENAS, Antonio; VELAZCO BOZA, Alejandro  and  GALLEGO RAMOS, Jany. Use of 800 ug of misoprostol for abortions up to 9 months . Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2004, vol.30, n.3, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3062.

The pharmacological abortion is nowadays one of the abortion methods with lower maternal morbimortality; however, the objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency and safety of the vaginal self-administration of 800 g of Misoprotol up to a maximum of 3 doses in a period of 24 hours, one every 8 hours, to provoke abortion up to the 9 weeks of gestation. The sample was composed of 450 patients that attended the family planning office and fulfilled the inclusion criteria. All the patients that aborted received an additional dose of 600 g of Misoprostol. The method was considered efficient when it caused complete abortion with no need of surgical procedures. Complete abortion occurred in 409 patients (90.8 %). The highest effectiveness of the method was attained with the first cycle in 390 cases (86.6 %). There were 41 failures (9.1 %). In 31 of them the method failed after the administration of the third dose, in 7 by medical decision and in 3 by the patient's decision. The most significant secondary effects were chills(48 %), nausea (29.1 %), pelvic pain (37.1%) and uterine bleeding greater that the menstrual bleeding (57.7 %). The results obtained suggest that the administration of a dose of 800 g of Misoprostol every 8 hours by vaginal route is an adequate method to interrupt pregnancy up to the 9 weeks of gestation.

Keywords : Misoprostol; abortion.
