Abstract

Climaterium is the period between the complete sexual maturity and the total loss of ovarian functions. In climaterium symptomatology are involved three types of factors: the gradual or sudden hormonal lack of balance and deficit, sociocultural and psychological and the sleep disorders are important symptoms in the climateric syndrome. OBJECTIVE: To identify some factors affecting to climateric woman and provoking sleep alterations. METHODS: A longitudinal, descriptive and prospective study was conducted in the climaterium consultation of the ''Andrés Ortiz'' Polyclinic from the Gynecology and Obstetrics Teaching Hospital of Guanabacoa municipality between May, 2009 and May, 2010. Sample included 119 patients seen in consultation due to sleep disorders as part of symptomatology related to climaterium and randomly we made a survey including data to be included in a statistical package and hence to extract the results for a subsequent analysis and discussion. RESULTS: The main results were: to maintain the sleep and to wake up due to breathlessness were the main sleep alterations for the 19.3 % and 17.6 %, respectively, the cramps in lower extremities appeared in the 80.6 %. Most of women not to do physical exercises (82.4 %). A high percentage (84.9 %) of these women are under stress. Coffee consumption is the pain substance consumed before to go to bed (51.2 %) CONCLUSION: Insomnia is the main sleep disorder of the climateric women that could to improve with changes in the lifestyle.
