Abstract

MARTINEZ TORRES, Jacqueline del Carmen. Characterization of middle-aged women suffering from urinary incontinence and their response to rehabilitation treatment. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2014, vol.40, n.1, pp.102-118. ISSN 0138-600X.

Introduction: some physiologically biological, psychological and social changes occur in women between 40 and 59 years of age. Changes in their genitourinary tract are among these changes that can produce urinary incontinence. Objectives: to characterize the middle-aged women suffering urinary incontinence undergoing treatment with physical agents and performing exercises, and therapeutic response. Methods: a descriptive, prospective, intervention research was conducted including all women between 40 and 59 years of age diagnosed with urinary incontinence who were assisted at pelvic floor consultation at CIMEQ Hospital from 2007 to 2012. Rehabilitation treatment was applied: magnet therapy, stimulative perineal electrotherapy, and re-educative physiotherapy, evaluating results by muscle and compress test. Results: out of 168 patients suffering urinary incontinence in both sexes, 47 % were middle-aged women, 40 % had their urinary incontinence associated with other pelvic floor dysfunction, 25 % due to effort and 34 % had mixed causes, 53.2 % had daily urine leak, and 32.9 % had it few times a week. Post-treatment: 28 were evaluated by muscle test and an hour compress testing. Response to treatment: 22 were cured (78.5 %) and 6 improved (21.5 %). None remained the same or worsened (p = 0.000 and 0.002 sig). Conclusions: most suffer from urinary incontinence associated with another condition of pelvic floor having daily losses, gynecological and obstetric history of pregnancies, deliveries, and episiotomies. The aftercare evolved towards healing and recovery.
