It was conducted a study of 80 patients who suffered from digestive bleeding with rupture of esophageal and gastric varices and were treated at 8 hospitals of Havana City: "Dr. Carlos J. Finlay", "Dr. Luis Díaz Soto", "General Calixto García", "Hermanos Ameijeiras", "Dr. Joaquín Albarrán", "Dr. Enrique Cabrera", "10 de Octubre", and "Dr. Salvador Allende", between 1988 and 1993. Patients were grouped according to Child-Turcotte's classification. The different urgent and elective therapeutic procedures were analyzed, as well as the most used method and the best to stop initial bleeding, prognosis and mortality. It was determined that the Sengstaken Blakemore's probe was the most used method and that the best results were obtained with it. The end-to-side portacaval anastomosis was the most common surgical technique. Mortality was high. There was diversity of criteria as regards the surgical treatment.
