This topic deserves particular attention due to the participation of free radicals in an increasing number of affections of great medicosocial interest. The conceptual aspects linked to these mechanisms of generation of the forms of the free radicals and their consequence at the molecular level due to their action in lipids, proteins and nucleic acids are presented. Their expression is approached from the pathogenic point of view, associated with the generation of biomolecules mediators of their action and cellular repercussion. The system of antioxidant defense the body has for its protection is also dealt with. The oxidative stress and the methods available at present to measure the oxidative damage are defined and, at the same time, some of the antioxidants, their mechanisms of action and preventive function in different diseases are made known.
