Abstract
PUGA TORRES, Mario Santiago et al. Use of a protocol for rapid weaning from mechanical ventilation. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2001, vol.30, suppl.5, pp. 29-33. ISSN 1561-3046.
With the objective of reducing the time of the weaning from ventilation support and decreasing the number of complications associated with the mechanical ventilation, a prospective study was made on 50 mechanically ventilated patients who were applied the rapid weaning protocol proposed by Manthous. The predictive value of various parameters reported as useful to predict the success of weaning. The area below the curve (curve ROC) was used to evaluate the predictive value of a test. 70% of the studied subjects were aged below 45 years and 60% were males. Respiratory frequency/tidal volume ratio was the better predictor with an area of 0.9. 88% (44 patients) was successfully weaned from mechanical ventilation regardless of the methods whereas the protocol application failed in only 6 patients. The outcome showed that mechanical ventilation might cease suddenly if the patient is able to breathe spontaneously for 60 minutes. It was considered that the application of this protocol made the reduction of the weaning period possible.
