Abstract

RODRIGUEZ ACOSTA, Mireida  and  GONZALEZ PLANA, Gema. Immune response of the patient with burn injuries. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2001, vol.30, suppl.5, pp.56-62. ISSN 0138-6557.

The patient with burn injuries is by definition a surgical, traumatic and extremely complex patient due to the vital, functional, aesthetic and psychological repercussions that she/he presents. The main immune disorders are focused on an anergy to antigens and mitogens, changes in lymphocyte subpopulations, deficiencies in the phagocytosis mechanism, altered expression and production of cytokines and its receptors; adhesion molecules and occurrence of leukocyte antigens associated with decrease of plasma proteins like immunoglobulins, complement factors and lipid peroxidation producing free oxygen radicals. All these disorders turn the patient with burn injuries into a prototype of immunocompromised patient who is prone to the onset and development of systemic inflammatory response syndrome that may lead him/her to death. This paper dealt with this exciting issue in a synthetic way, mainly it tries to give a vision of the main mechanisms of production.
