Abstract

ALFONSO MUNOZ, Santiago  and  PEREZ CAPDET, Pablo. Nueva técnica para restablecer la oponencia del pulgar. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2002, vol.31, n.1, pp. 32-36. ISSN 1561-3046.

A new surgical technique is presented to reestablish the opposition of the thumb in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome and paralysis of the motor branch of the median nerve. From September, 1999, to April, 2000, 10 patients with an average age of 53 years old and with a diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome and paralysis of the motor branch of the median nerve for the thenar region, were intentionally selected. They underwent the following procedures: opening of the volar transverse ligament of the carpus, external neurolysis of the median nerve, synovectomy, tenolysis of the flexor tendons, and a new technique to reestablish the thumb opposition of the thumb. Of the treated series (10 cases), 4 were evaluated as excellent (40 %), 5 as good (50 %), and 1 as fair (10 %), according to the evaluation criteria of Sundararaj and Mani, from 1984. This new surgical technique to reestablish the opposition of the thumb made possible that 90 % of the cases were evaluated as satisfactory.
