A literature review was made on the topic of in-hospital infections from the history of these diseases, the great medical figures related to them and their contributions to efforts that are being made at present to prevent and control this scourge at hospitals. Data were provided, which proved the negative impact of nosocomial infections on health, economics and society as well. The most updated approaches on the concept and factors giving rise to these infections as well as their causative agents were set forth. The above-mentioned is presented on the basis of national and international realities, and particularly the realities of "Dr Luis Díaz Soto" central military hospital.
