A series of 30 patients operated on of the upper limb from September, 1999, to September, 2000. is presented. They were diagnosed compression syndrome of the carpal tunnel and paralysis of the motor branch of the median nerve affecting the opponent thumb. Surgical treatment was applied to the base affection and a new surgical technique was used to reestablish the opponent thumb. This way, the functional restitution of the opposition and the disappearance of the symptoms were guaranteed in 90 % of the patients, as well as the incorporation to a useful and active social life with few postoperative complications.
