Abstract
ARPA GAMEZ, Ángel; GONZALEZ SOTOLONGO, Odalys and CABREJAS ACUNA, María Ofelia. Valor de la biopsia aspirativa con aguja fina en el diagnóstico etiológico del nódulo tiroideo. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2003, vol.32, n.3, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3046.
The usefulness of the fine needle biopsy (FNB) in the ethiological diagnosis of the thyroid nodule is recognized by everyone. However, the efficiency of the procedure should be validated at every center. In spite of the fact that this biopsy has been performed for more than 10 years at "Dr. Luis Díaz Soto" Military Central Hospital, it is the first report on this topic. 90 patients with diagnosis of thyroid nodule that would have been subjected to FNB between 1994 and 1996, were studied. The results of that initial FNB were correlated with the results of the histological study in patients operated on (partial or total thyroidectomy) or with the clinical follow-up and/or FNB in the patients that did not undergo surgery. A diasgnostic sensitivity of 70.00 %, a specificity of 81.25 % and a predictability for positive cases of 31.81 % and of 95.58 % for FNB negative cases were obtained. The efficacy index was 80.00. FNB proved to be a useful tool to define the bening or malignant character of a thyroid nodule, although it should always be assessed in the clinical context of each case in particular.
