A literature review on the socio-economic impact of schizophrenia in Cuba and worldwide was made. Historic, economic and social aspects were covered; and an analysis of the differences existing among these aspects at hospital setting and the primary health care level. The review also comprised the particularities of care for squizophrenic patient in Cuba within the National Health Care system through the mental health program taking care of the squizophrenic patient and the relation of this program with the rest of the domestic health programs. Emphasis was made on the need of assessing the schizophrenic patient as a disabled person, with all the benefits that the society renders, within the medical field and the community.
