YERA LOYOLA, Lourdes Elena; HERNANDEZ RODRIGUEZ, Miguel Ángel; RODRIGUEZ PEREZ, Iván and CASTANER MORENO, Juan. Acute renal failure in the critical patient. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2004, vol.33, n.3, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3046.
A prospective and descriptive study was conducted in 826 patients admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of "Manuel Ascunce Domenech" Provincial Teaching Hospital, in Camagúey, from January 2001 to January 2002, aimed at knowing the incidence of acute renal failure, the factors taking part in its development, mortality and hospital stay, among other aspects. Serum creatinin was daily determined, as well as the measurement of diuresis and the determination of electrolites and blood gases. 15 % of these patients were diagnosed acute renal failure. The shock states and the systemic sepsis were the main causes of renal failure. Hospital stay in this group of patients was longer. The dialytic treatment was carried out in 12.6 % of them. Renal falilure was not the direct cause of death in any of the deceased cases, but it did influence on the total number of them.
Keywords : acute renal failure; hemodialysis, shock.
