Abstract

MARTIN BOURRICAUDY, Norkys et al. Risk factors related to relaparotomies after gastrointestinal surgery. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2008, vol.37, n.1. ISSN 0138-6557.

A retrospective and descriptive study was conducted among 73 patients that required relaparotomies of a total of 3 070 gastrointestinal interventions, accounting for 2.73. The objective was to identify the risk factors related to relaparotomies. The data were obtained from the medical histories and from the reports of the necropsies, and they were statistically processed. It was observed a prevalence of patients over 50 and of those whose initial operation was due to intestinal occlusion during an emergency surgery. The most frequent causes of surgical reintervention were mostly connected with difficulties in the initial surgical technique. The index of global mortality was 52.05 %, and it was directly related to the number of surgical reinterventions.

Keywords : Surgical reinterventions; gastrointestinal surgery; risk factors; results.
